How to choose the right painting for your child

Reading time: 19 minutes

Delight your child with a wooden board or slate!

To help your child develop his creativity, motor skills and any other skills that may be more abstract for him, it's a good idea to offer him a chalkboard or slate. Unlike traditional children's bedroom furniture, wooden chalkboards have real educational and play value.

Magnetic board, wall-mounted or free-standing? In this guide, we share useful information to help you choose the idealwooden board orslate for your child's age, learning and play space.

Choosing the right painting: important criteria before buying

Would you like to offer your child a fun, modular play surface, but are concerned about the space available in his room, or his safety when playing alone? To guarantee peace of mind and fun for the whole family, here's a checklist of criteria to consider before buying a wooden board:

Safety factors to consider :

When choosing a board to entertain your child, safety is an essential criterion. Here are a few key factors to consider:

  • Board height: to guarantee accessibility and prevent your child from tipping it over, be sure to take into account the overall height of your board if it's on legs. You can choose an adjustable board to adjust to your growing child's height.

As a general rule, children should be able to draw facing them, whether they're using a chalkboard, a wallboard or a slate: they'll be more comfortable and able to write or draw at eye level. If your child needs to lift his arms more, it's best to adjust the height of the support if possible.

  • Recommended age: be sure to take into account the safety age indicated by the manufacturer before buying your children's board. This age is defined according to regulated tests. Small parts may be present (screws, magnets, etc.), so Janod boards are designed for children aged 3 and over. The minimum age is also defined according to the child's size and acquired skills, in order to offer a suitable play experience.

You can find the recommended age on the front of each box and directly on our online product sheets.

Choose a painting for the quality of the materials used:

A good-quality wooden board or slate is essential for your child's safety and the toy's longevity. Here are a few key features to guide you:

Choose a wooden slate or chalkboard that's both sturdy and durable, to ensure it stands the test of time and your child's handling.

To blend in with the decor of your child's bedroom, study area or even living room, a wooden picture is ideal. It's a piece of furniture in the truest sense of the word, which is a plus when you consider that it will have a special place in your child's play world for many years to come!

Consider choosing a wooden board or slate made from sustainable or eco-friendly materials, such as FSC®-certified wood (from responsibly managed forests). We offer several toys, including adorable wooden magnet sets, all FSC® certified.

Accessories included :

If you want your child to enjoy his new medium of expression right away, with everything he needs to write, draw, paint or play with magnets!

All Janod wooden boards come with a set of matching accessories: dry-erase markers, colored chalks, brushes, magnets, paint pots, paper rolls, etc. You can even complete your magnetic board with our sets of cute magnets!

Practical advice to help you choose your board or slate:

Before starting your search for the ideal board or slate, we advise you to define the space(s) where the toy will be installed and used, as well as stored. This will guide your search and help you decide whether to opt for a wall-mounted or free-standing board, or a tabletop or mobile slate.

You need a large enough space to enjoy a double-sided board, and above all to be able to store it! A folding wooden board will fit perfectly into a wardrobe or under a bed, while a wall-mounted chalkboard is not intended to be carried around on a daily basis.

Once you've defined your space requirements, be sure to take into account the toy's dimensions and functionalities to ensure that it meets your needs and expectations.

Wooden slate: creativity without compromise

You don't have enough space in your child's bedroom for a painting? Is your toddler restless and prefers to sit where he's most inspired to draw? A wooden slate is the perfect solution! Here's why:

  • Compact: as well as saving space in your child's play area, a chalkboard is easy for little hands to handle. At Janod, wooden slates come in a variety of shapes to suit every taste: with rounded forms, compartments for easy access to accessories, handles on the sides..

  • Nomadic: because children can be active and creative,Janod slates follow them wherever inspiration takes them! From a tabletop slate to a nomadic hanging board, little ones make their own slate, taking it with them wherever they go in the house or out, so they can let their imagination run free.

What are the advantages of a painting for a child?

Wooden slates and boards offer many educational benefits for children. Here are just a few examples:

Children develop coordination and motor skills by manipulating magnets and chalk or felt-tip pens on the support.

Chalkboards and slates can inspire children's imagination and creative expression. They can invent stories and characters, even draw a treasure map or imagine the plans for an ingenious machine!

No more drawing on walls or in unsuspected places! Give your child a support dedicated to his creative expression: with its pretty colors, attractive design and accessories, your child will quickly adopt his easel and understand that he has a support all his own to make his most beautiful frescoes.

There's nothing like a message or a drawing to express yourself! Children love to leave their mark, especially when their imagination is running wild. Using an erasable medium allows them to perfect their drawing or writing techniques by doing it again and again, thus boosting their self-confidence.

For children who quickly tire of paper and pencil, or who take on more abstract notions as they get older, such as geometry or conjugation, for example, a change of medium helps to bring learning into sharper focus. The advantage of an erasable board is that you're less afraid of making mistakes and starting over!

Who hasn't used a blackboard to help with homework, play teacher or proudly display grocery store opening times when playing shop? The children's blackboard or slate is not just a support for learning, it's also an opportunity to play, to display a creation and to share a moment of exchange thanks to a more attractive medium than a sheet of paper.

How to preserve the longevity of a wooden painting

To ensure the longevity and safety of your wooden picture, be sure to follow the advice given in the supplied instructions. Here are a few recommendations:

  • If you need to clean your toy, use a slightly damp, non-abrasive cloth. Do not insist on cleaning painted parts, and do not use detergents.

  • Avoid exposing the wooden board to extreme temperatures.

  • Store your child's wooden board in a dry place to avoid damage caused by humidity.

Magnets for kids: give (a second) life to your painting!

Does your child know all the secrets of writing and drawing? Are you tired of finding the magnets on the fridge on his chalkboard, or vice versa? How about a gift of beautiful wooden magnets in the world of your child's choice?

To bring your child's drawings to life, entertain him and help him find new inspirations every day, Janod magnet sets have it all! We tell you why:

Is your toddler running out of ideas? Don't let "blank page" anxiety limit his creativity! With just one or a few magnets, the imagination is unleashed and real worlds are created. There's a beautiful dinosaur, but what if I drew a pond for him to drink from, or a bus for him to drive? Anything's possible!

Make pairs, play tic-tac-toe or invent stories! We offer "Mix & Match" magnets, each with 2 parts, so kids can mix and match the wooden magnets or have fun finding the right combinations: the little ones' chalkboard becomes a big game board!

For little ones aged 2 and over, using magnets can be a great way to stimulate their vocabulary and teach them new words. You can invite your child to place the magnet on his magnet board if he's got his name right, or ask him about the animals or vehicles he's included in his drawing: it's up to you to create your own educational game mechanics!

Grab the magnets, put them down, adjust them, take them off and start again! A great way to develop children's coordination skills. The characters, shapes and colors of our wooden magnets arouse their curiosity: little ones will naturally want to manipulate them.

Pleasant to the touch, our magnetic board magnet sets are made of wood, a sturdy, durable material. The style of the elements reinforces the charm of the wood, and makes you want to decorate every magnetic surface in the house with your kids' magnets... We know what you mean!

Wooden chalkboards and slates are fun, durable supports for creativity and a multitude of learning skills, such as vocabulary, coordination and imagination. Well-maintained, these toys promise long moments of sharing and creative expression for children aged 3 and over. For back-to-school drawing and writing enthusiasts, the gift of a chalkboard or slate is the gift of self-expression!

By adding magnets, magnetic surfaces become more dynamic and children's stories come to life.
