Each shape corresponds to a colour, for easy learning and handling by baby. When our crocodile friend has eaten well, you can open up his mouth to collect the pieces (magnetic opening). For a peaceful meal, the inside of the shape box is covered with felt, which reduces the noise the shapes make when they fall.
