From 15 months to 3 years of age, your baby will love construction and manipulation games: they help develop dexterity, fine motor skills and perception, all while having fun. Looking for gifts for an 18-month-old baby? An activity cube, a shape box or a wooden puzzle are always great gift ideas for your child's Christmas or birthday. Follow our guide to find the activity toy that will develop your little one's senses to your heart's content!

Wooden cube, pyramid & balance game

For babies from 12 to 36 months

Offering baby balance games and cubes helps develop fine motor skills, prehension and hand-eye coordination. Children aged 12 to 36 months will learn to plan their actions and find their bearings in space: essential skills for their development.

Stacking cubes to form a tower, then knocking them all over: little ones love it! And it's even more fun when baby's cube is decorated with animals, the alphabet or numbers. Ideal for introducing the notion of size and balance, cardboard cubes are a classic early-learning toy.

A game of skill and balance will always make baby laugh out loud! A real exercise in concentration and meticulousness, Janod's balancing game is always colorful and fun: you stack funny animals, various shapes and more or less complex ... It's a great way to start using logic and have fun, alone or with others, from the age of 2.

Wooden puzzle & shape box

For babies from 12 to 18 months

Building blocks are fun early toys, but they're not the only ones: they're also of great interest to children's psychomotor development. They're an ideal gift for young children, giving them the opportunity to anchor essential notions for future learning... All while playing!

There's nothing like a puzzle activity to keep a young child busy. First-age puzzles enable babies to develop their motor skills and learn to reproduce a model. With studs and/or pieces suitable for small hands, baby puzzles often depict animals or shapes. To multiply experiences, a tactile puzzle or a musical puzzle promises long moments of play for children from 18 months.

The early-learning toy that's always a hit? The baby shape box, of course! Shaped like a cube, triangle or little house, the Janod shape box is always easy for your little one to grasp. From the age of 12 months, they'll enjoy fitting characters or geometric shapes into the right place: a real exercise in problem-solving and trial-and-error experimentation.

Skills stimulated by puzzles and cubes in children

Explanations from Jauffrey BLERVAQUE, pshychomotrician

Puzzles and cubes enable children to develop a wide range of essential learning skills. An early childhood professional explains these skills to you, so you can understand all the psychomotor knowledge at play for your child when he makes his puzzle, or his pyramid of cubes!

When your child opens the game box, he'll first discover the shapes, curves, images and colors. Through the integration of his sensory perceptions, particularly touch and sight, he'll appropriate this information and give it meaning. He will manipulate them, turn them around and analyze them to integrate them.

By evoking the names of colors, shapes and images, he will make links, and neuronal plasticity will enable thousands of connections! He will then integrate and learn progressively through repetition.

To catch the cubes, baby will have to adapt the shape of his hand and fingers to the size of the object. He will then integrate a fine part of his body schema that will enable him to have increasingly precise and adapted gestures in his spatial and tonic dimension. At first, the force used may be too great or, on the contrary, too weak, depending on his condition and personal tonic level. Gradually, through trial and error, he will integrate the necessary and useful force into each of his gestures, for increasing performance and success!

Manual dexterity is the set of motor skills that enable fine, precise gestures. The more your child manipulates, touches and experiments, the more effective his fine motor skills will become. He'll reap the benefits of these skills in his everyday actions, and even when holding a pencil at school.

The older they get, the more they've manipulated and observed, the more they'll know and understand the links between cause and effect; they'll then be able to link colors and shapes together, orient and organize them logically, developing their visual-spatial abilities.

With colors to match or patterns to reproduce, children aged 18 months to 4 years will develop dexterity and mental flexibility.
